It’s Jacob Green, a Jewish kid from suburban New Jersey, sits on the stairs during his family’s housewarming party, waiting for his father, Abram–charming. Despite being cited as being a slow read by some, my reading of Joshua Braff’s hilarious The Unthinkable Thoughts of Jacob Green was over in one short. It’s not bad enough that Jacob Green has a father like Abraham, a man so narcissistic that his need for self-aggrandizement operates as a black tue in the family. But in keeping with his genus, he is also absurdly preoccupied with his own importance, and in staying loyal to this, he can be boastful and unkind and condescending and has an insatiable hunger to be seen as infallible. But can we allude to that without a constant stream of smut? So much so, ggeen I almost wish the narrator had chosen to write the story from his perspective, instead. With his one gift being annunciation of the Hebrew language, he finds trying harder and harder to “please” his father by going to prayer and struggling to “love” him as Abrom demands when the divorce is first discussed.
Jacob has an older brother that is quite the rebel. In the end the narcissist must compensate for this core vulnerability he carries and as a result an overestimation of his own importance arises. Instead, amusement crossed my lips, as character after character acted out in the craziest manner, and I found untyinkable hanging on for the ride.
So it feeds itself, cyclically. The book has an unresolved ending — not everything is spelled out for us although we know there are choices to be made by Jacob.

I definitely thoughhs think you have to be Jewish to truly enjoy this book and you might even learn something about that religion. This novel is a gem.
He has written for a number of literary journals. Braff’s rich, moving, and very funny first novel begins with a housewarming party at which Abram dramatically introduces each member of his family while the four children and their mother seethe with resentment at being paraded as testaments to Abram’s greatness.

Finally picking it up was definitely a treat, albeit a cringey treat that made me want to punch a fictional character. As Jacob enters adolescence, he obediently participates in his father’s tedious rituals as the family deteriorates: One of thr best strategies the writer employs is to drop in the heartbreak of the book in such a nonchalant, straightforward manner that you never see it coming.

His father, who is obsessively anxious to be seen as the head of a perfect Jewish family, is acutely conscious of his background and resents the fact that his parents didn’t raise him with knowledge of his faith and heritage. It’s a beautifully written story about an adolescent and his overbearing father.
